Sima Kumar is a New Jersey educator, mother, a board member of The E Pluribus Unum Project (TEPUP), who testified at the Assembly and Senate Education Committee meeting in support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander curriculum. Governor Murphy signed the bill into law on January 18, 2022. Kumar will lead a professional development seminar that highlights the resources for integrating AAPI content while including lesson ideas on using historical thinking through an interdisciplinary lens.

Tools and Techniques to Address Interpersonal and Intercultural Conflict Management - Support Staff Session -- Via Zoom

This session is designed specifically for school support staff, including nurses, aides, drivers, lunch personnel, and administrative staff, and will focus on enhancing a respectful and inclusive environment with the goals of helping these individuals: Avoid Crises, Promote Greater Productivity, and Strive to Increase Teacher, Parent, and Student Satisfaction. This program will include discussions of key social themes in present-day education. Topics include dispute resolution, cultural sensitivity in the school environment, bullying and cyber bullying, restorative justice, and more. This program is co-presented by the Diversity Council on Global Education and Citizenship and the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators (NJAPM), Committee on Diversity, Inclusion and Cultural Competency. The NJAPM is an association of professionals engaged in and dedicated to the practice of dispute resolution.

LGBTQ+ Educators' Discussion -- Via Zoom

Scott Fried is an educator, international award-winning speaker and writer. As a person living with HIV for over 36 years, he survived that 20th-century pandemic, where his HIV/AIDS support group became the inspiration for the Broadway musical "RENT." Scott's work spotlights the adolescent years, shining a powerful message of love, self-respect, and mental wellness. He is the author of four books, including his newest, How to Raise an Elegant Teen: The ABCs of Gen Z Parenting. He is an adjunct professor at Colby College where he teaches a popular class called “AIDS and the Meaning of Life.” Scott also offers one-on-one behavioral coaching to teens, parents, and couples and facilitates virtual support groups for parents of trans children. In his spare time, he leads civil rights tours through the American South, teaching the history of MLK.
Allison Connolly, an educator with 20+ years of experience, is the Equity Coach for the Township of Ocean School District. With a BA and M.A. in Education, progressing toward a second M.A. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, she actively contributes to Educators for Equality and Kean’s Diversity Council. Allison advocates for LGBTQ+ inclusivity and serves crucial roles in educational advocacy.
Kate Okeson, the co-founder of Make It Better for Youth, supports Monmouth County's LGBTQ+ community through education and outreach, fostering creative thought and developing inclusive curriculum pathways. Under her direction, Make It Better for Youth emphasizes educator-to-educator initiatives, significantly supporting LGBTQ+ youth in education and creating a positive impact in New Jersey.
